Exact figures for the production year 1940 are hard to find. Although in the various documentation, the total number of 10,923 machines is withheld. As we substract the 5,000 "CAV" machines for the French Army, this leaves us with a total of 5,923 bikes for 1940.
The highest "Chief" crankcase reference we found until now is "CDO 4374". So we may assume that for 1940 a total 4,374 Indian Chief’s was built. The 1,549 other machines were FOUR’s (Model 440), THIRTY-FIFTY’s (Model 540), SPORT SCOUT’s (Model 640) and some DISPATCH TOW’s (Model DT 40).
So this leaves us with a production of 4,374 CHIEF’s. In this number is also included a batch of 100 military bikes (with "CDO xxxx") on their left crankcase).
The Model 340... the first of a total new Indian - generation. The archetype of the Indian iconographic series of the valanced fenders.
